Alphabet's TPU Sales Pave the Way for Cloud Growth and Competition

Alphabet's second-quarter earnings report highlighted the company's cloud business, which saw sales growth of 82% year-over-year. Google Cloud's revenue reached $24.8 billion, a significant acceleration from the previous quarter's 63% growth rate. The tech giant also ended the period with a substantial cloud backlog of $514 billion.

Alphabet has been designing custom AI chips called TPUs (Tensor Processing Units) for its cloud computing segment. These chips have become increasingly important for the company, and CEO Sundar Pichai announced earlier this year that Alphabet would start selling them to outside customers due to high demand. During the second-quarter earnings conference call, management revealed that the company has begun realizing revenue from these sales.

The sale of TPUs is likely a small part of Alphabet's total revenue at present but could become a significant growth driver if demand remains strong. This development puts the company in direct competition with Nvidia, which currently supplies GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) to many customers. However, custom chips like TPUs have advantages over GPUs, including lower costs and improved efficiency for specific workloads.

Broadcom has worked with Alphabet on TPU design and has a long-term deal extending through 2031. As a result, if Alphabet's TPU sales grow rapidly, that will also benefit Broadcom's business. While there is still uncertainty surrounding Alphabet's TPU revenue, the company's cloud business and other growth drivers make it well-positioned for long-term success.
