Amazon Ad Scandal Sends Trade Desk Stock Soaring
The Trade Desk stock surged on Wednesday, rising as much as 5.2% in a relief rally after a competitor's ad practices drew scrutiny from a government agency and a lawsuit.
At the heart of the matter is Amazon, which is facing a complaint from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and 22 states alleging that it secretly and systematically overcharged advertisers through undisclosed surcharges in its real-time ad auctions. The FTC claims this was done because Amazon was unhappy with the revenue generated by its advertising auctions.
Amazon has fired back, calling the lawsuit 'misguided' and stating that the FTC's claim 'fundamentally misunderstands how advertisers operate'. This controversy may benefit The Trade Desk, which has long championed transparent pricing in digital advertising. Recent advances in artificial intelligence have made it tougher for smaller rivals like The Trade Desk to compete with large competitors like Amazon.
