Amazon Anaconda Discovery Unveils Hidden Diversity and Pollution Risks
Deep in the Amazon rainforest, a team of scientists led by Professor Bryan Fry from the University of Queensland stumbled upon an extraordinary discovery while filming a National Geographic documentary series with actor Will Smith. The team was studying the impacts of oil drilling on local wildlife and were working hand-in-hand with the Waorani Indigenous group to trace how pollution moved through the ecosystem.
The researchers focused on anacondas, apex predators that are uniquely vulnerable when habitats are degraded. As they collected data, they noticed physical differences among snakes from different regions, which sparked a closer look at their genetic diversity.
Initially, scientists considered green anacondas across South America to be one species, but DNA evidence revealed two separate species - despite nearly identical appearances and behaviors. The Ecuadorian green anacondas were found to be longer than their Brazilian relatives, with size differences narrowing among the largest females. Professor Fry highlighted another striking contrast: size between the sexes, with males growing up to twice as long as females.
The research team analyzed heavy metal concentrations in tissue samples and found that male snakes carried up to ten times more lead and cadmium than females, likely due to industrial oil pollution creeping into aquatic environments. The study's findings underscore how deeply environmental damage penetrates this ecosystem and highlights the growing threats pressing on Amazonian biodiversity.
