Amazon has acquired DuckLabs, an Amsterdam-based software developer behind the open-source database project DuckDB. The deal brings expertise in data analysis to Amazon Web Services (AWS), aiming to strengthen its analytics offerings.

The acquisition does not include DuckDB, which will remain a separate open-source project under the oversight of the nonprofit DuckDB Foundation. The two founders of DuckLabs, Hannes Muhleisen and Mark Raasveldt, will continue directing the company's team and technical work.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but Amazon expects to benefit from DuckLabs' engineering capabilities within AWS. This move comes as cloud providers compete to improve tools for data processing and analysis. Integrating DuckLabs is expected to make AWS analytics products more user-friendly and cost-effective.
