Amazon Cargo Jet Crash: Thrust Levers Increased to Go-Around Power After Touchdown
A fatal Boeing 767-300 freighter crash at Miami's airport on September 6 has sparked investigation into the cause of the accident. According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), flight-data recorder information shows that the aircraft's thrust levers were increased to go-around power 15 seconds after touchdown, before being reduced to idle.
Chief investigator Chihoon Shin stated that the increase in thrust was 'consistent with go-around thrust', but did not confirm whether this signalled an attempted go-around during the accident sequence. The aircraft's brakes were released 15 seconds after touchdown at a groundspeed of 120kt, and the throttles were reduced to idle thrust 4 seconds later.
The NTSB is still gathering information on the pilots' experience and flight hours, as captain received his 767 type rating in May this year, while the first officer received his in April 2025. The safety board is also interviewing the pilots on September 9 to gather their account of the accident.
