Amazon Cargo Jet Crashes Off Runway at Miami International Airport
A Boeing 767 cargo jet operated by Amazon Prime Air crashed off the runway at Miami International Airport, killing five people and injuring several others. The plane had arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico, on Sunday afternoon and was attempting to land when it overshot the runway, plowing into vehicles and catching fire. According to aviation experts, the plane likely touched down too late to stop safely, and investigators will examine factors such as speed, braking, weather conditions, and aircraft mechanical condition.
Video footage of the landing appears to show the plane remaining airborne well down the runway before touching down. Experts say that if the plane had landed beyond the normal touchdown zone, the pilots should have aborted the landing and gone around for another attempt.
The National Transportation Safety Board has sent a team to investigate the crash, led by Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy, who is expected to give a briefing on Monday. The agency will also examine the plane's maintenance history, including its previous ownership by a Russian company.
