A Boeing 767 cargo plane operated by Amazon overshot a runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday, September 8, 2026, killing five people and injuring two pilots. Joseph Carroll, 55, of Lafayette, Colorado, was one of the injured pilots. The plane had been landing after a two-hour flight from Puerto Rico as storms brewed around the airport.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the crash to determine whether the plane touched down too far down the runway and was unable to stop safely. They are also examining broader questions about runway safety, pilot decision-making, and weather conditions during landing.

The NTSB noted that the plane spent a long time hovering above the runway before touching down, and experts said it appeared a strong tail wind propelled the plane far past the point where it was supposed to land. Air traffic controllers had not changed the approach to the runway to allow the plane to land into a headwind.

The five people killed were all in a van owned by Professional Ocean Service Corp., which cleans planes. The company declined to comment on the crash out of respect for the families who lost loved ones.
