An Amazon cargo plane veered off a runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of at least five people and injuring five others. The incident occurred around 2 p.m. after the plane arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The aircraft overran the runway and struck vehicles along the road used by warehouse workers and businesses surrounding the airport. Miami-Dade County officials reported that three critically injured individuals were hospitalized, while two others sustained less severe injuries. It remains unclear whether the pilots survived or if all those killed were in vehicles during the incident.

The crash sent thick black smoke billowing into the sky, trapping the pilot and copilot in the cockpit and some occupants in cars. Miami-Dade Rescue Fire Chief Ray Jadallah stated that crews had to extricate a person trapped under a vehicle. The Prime Air plane came to rest beside two semitrucks, with images showing it resting on its belly despite being largely intact.

The cause of the incident has yet to be determined, and it's unclear if weather played a role. Thunderstorms and wind gusts up to 30 mph were recorded in the area at the time, according to the National Weather Service.

Amazon stated that they would cooperate with any investigation into the matter. The company expressed their sympathies for those affected by the incident.
