Amazon Countries Unite to Crush Environmental Crime in Massive Operation

A massive crackdown on environmental crime in the Amazon has resulted in hundreds of arrests and the seizure of thousands of tons of illicit goods. Operation Green Shield 2026, a coordinated effort between authorities from five Amazon countries - Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru - ran from July 15-31 and involved over 3,600 officers.

The operation targeted illegal mining, logging, wildlife trafficking, fuel smuggling, and land grabbing, with officials reporting 839 arrests during 1,045 field actions. The authorities seized more than 280,000 cubic meters of illegally harvested timber, enough to fill roughly 110 Olympic-sized swimming pools, along with 195 metric tons of minerals.

The operation also rescued over 3,000 live animals and recovered at least 430 dead animals linked to wildlife trafficking. Investigators say the same criminal organizations often combine illegal mining, logging, and wildlife trafficking, using shared trafficking routes and financial networks that span national borders.
