Amazon Delivery Model Under Threat from New York City Regulation

A New York City proposal backed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani aims to require Amazon.com Inc. to hire thousands of contract couriers, potentially disrupting the company's low-cost delivery model.

The Delivery Protection Act would close a loophole that allows Amazon to distance itself from worker injuries and grueling conditions while also making it harder for workers to form unions, according to supporters.

A majority of City Council sponsorship has been secured, and the legislation is expected to pass by this fall. If passed in New York, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters plans to promote a similar bill in other cities.
