Amazon has stunned observers by announcing it will spend $200 billion on AI investments. The e-commerce giant's latest quarterly results show that consumer spending remains strong, with fourth-quarter sales climbing 14% to $213.4 billion.

The company's advertising business saw a 22% jump in revenue to $21.32 billion, while its cloud computing division, AWS, reported a 24% increase to $35.6 billion. Operating income advanced to $25 billion for the quarter, although it came in slightly below Wall Street expectations.

The real surprise came with Amazon's bombshell announcement of its investment ambitions. According to president and CEO Andy Jassy, the company plans to pour $200 billion into capital expenditures due to 'such strong demand for our existing offerings and seminal opportunities like AI, chips, robotics, and low-earth orbit satellites.'
