Amazon Eyes Drone Deliveries in Pflugerville Amid Surveillance Concerns

Amazon is considering drone deliveries in Pflugerville, Texas, according to a recent city council presentation.

The company's Prime Air service has been delivering by drone since 2022 and uses 100% electric MK30 drones that can carry items up to five pounds within a 7.5-mile radius from the fulfillment center.

The drones have forward- and rear-facing cameras and sensors, but Amazon assures they do not have surveillance capabilities, saying 'It can't scan faces, look at license plates, or take pictures or images,' according to Sam Bailey, senior manager of economic policy at Amazon.

Apart from the technical details, there were concerns about noise and public safety. Council member Kimberly Holiday asked for proof that the drones do not have surveillance capabilities, citing the recent incident with Flock.
