A federal judge has granted class certification to consumers suing Amazon.com Inc. over its alleged anti-discounting policy, escalating legal pressure on the e-commerce giant. The ruling by Judge John H. Chun of the US District Court for the Western District of Washington came on Monday, marking a significant procedural victory for the plaintiffs.
Chun’s decision noted that the motion for class certification presents numerous common questions of law and fact central to the plaintiffs’ claims. The ruling allows the case to proceed as a class action, potentially involving at least 10 million consumers who filed the lawsuit in 2020.
The plaintiffs allege that Amazon’s policies have harmed consumers by restricting discounts. The case now moves forward with the possibility of resolving these claims on a class-wide basis, based on a common body of evidence.
