Amazon opens high-tech robotics fulfillment center in Wilmington
Amazon has officially launched its new robotics fulfillment center in Wilmington, North Carolina, following a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday. The facility, which has been operational since August, spans four and a half floors and is the company's first fulfillment center in southeastern North Carolina. Over 1,000 employees are already working at the site, with the company continuing to expand its operations.
The fulfillment center combines advanced robotics and human labor to streamline the process of selecting, scanning, and sorting products for delivery. Robots on the floor transport storage bins, while others use robotic arms to sort items. Automated systems also assist in packaging products for shipment.
Amazon’s Vice President of Economic Development, Holly Sullivan, highlighted the company's significant deployment of over 1 million robots in the past decade. She emphasized that Amazon has been the top job creator in the country, benefiting local residents by speeding up package delivery.
North Carolina Secretary of Commerce Lee Lilley praised the facility's workforce and technology, noting that the integration of robotics and fiber optics enhances connectivity for businesses across the state and beyond. Lilley also underscored the importance of North Carolina's talent pool in attracting businesses to the state.
