Amazon Partners with Constellation to Uprate Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Plant
Constellation Energy has partnered with Amazon to uprate the Calvert Cliffs nuclear power plant in Maryland. The deal involves a $3 billion investment in infrastructure improvements and will increase the plant's capacity by about 10%.
The Calvert Cliffs plant, which has two pressurized water reactors, was built in the 1970s and currently generates 1,788 MWe of power. Amazon's planned uprate represents an extended power uprate, which requires significant modifications to major equipment.
Constellation emphasized that this deal will provide revenue certainty for the company, helping with relicensing efforts for the plant, which are set to expire in 2034 and 2036. This revenue certainty will also enable Constellation to pursue new clean energy power plants at the site.
