Amazon Prime Sale and Emmys Deal Boost XLY Performance
Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN) launched its Prime Big Deal Days sale on October 5, offering discounts across over 35 categories for 48 hours. The event is set to run through October 7, providing Prime members with a wide range of deals.
In a separate but significant development, Prime Video secured a six-year deal with the Television Academy to become the exclusive global home of the Emmys starting with the 2027 ceremony. This shift marks a departure from the traditional rotation among broadcast networks ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC, reflecting the growing trend of live events moving to streaming platforms.
The State Street Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLY) saw a 1.3% gain over the five trading days ending October 5, closing at $110.42. This performance ranked fourth among State Street’s 11 sector ETFs. Amazon, which constitutes 23.29% of XLY’s holdings, contributed to this rise with a 2.1% increase in its share price, closing at $251.40.
Within XLY, cruise operators Carnival Corp. (CCL) and Royal Caribbean Cruises (RCL) posted the most significant gains, rising 15.5% and 13.4% respectively over the same period. Tesla, Inc. (TSLA), another major holding, also outperformed Amazon with a nearly 6% increase. The ETF’s largest industry group is hotels, restaurants, and leisure, making up 25.72% of its holdings as of October 5.
