Amazon Pushes Back Against Data Center Opposition
Amazon Web Services (AWS) CEO Matt Garman recently released a memo urging communities to stop opposing data centers, citing their importance in AI development. In the 3,100-word document, Garman emphasized that building out these facilities is 'the race our nation can't afford to lose' and promised over $1 billion in funding for local communities over five years.
Amazon plans to spend $220 billion on capital expenditures this year, with a significant portion dedicated to data centers. To address concerns about power demands and environmental impact, the company will publish annual reports on energy use and efficiency. Additionally, AWS is dropping its nondisclosure agreements with local officials, which has been a contentious issue in Congress.
Garman also downplayed worries over water usage, energy prices, and backup generators, stating that these concerns are 'overstated.' He warned communities against blocking data centers, suggesting that this could harm the economy and national security. The memo comes as other AI giants, such as Microsoft and Meta, have made similar moves to build data centers.
