Amazon Raises US Employee Minimum Wage to $20 Ahead of Holiday Season
Amazon has increased its minimum starting hourly wage for full-time core operations employees in the US to $20, effective September 27. This move is aimed at boosting employee compensation ahead of the crucial holiday shopping season.
The pay increase translates to a $1-per-hour boost across the board for these workers, who perform jobs such as packing and shipping orders. As a result, their average pay will reach nearly $24 per hour, according to Amazon. The company also stated that its employees' average total compensation, including benefits, will exceed $32 an hour.
In addition to the wage hike, Amazon is introducing new employee benefits, including a 10% discount on eligible fresh groceries and everyday essentials at Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market online. Employees will also receive 20% off at Whole Foods physical stores, with the discount combinable with existing Prime member discounts.
