Amazon Reverses Course on Sideload Ban for Fire TV Devices

Amazon has confirmed that it will restore sideloading capabilities to its Fire TV devices in an upcoming software update. The company's decision comes after a recent patch blocked third-party apps from being installed on certain Fire TV devices, citing security concerns.

The update, which was rolled out late last year, aimed to improve performance and fix bugs but inadvertently disabled sideloading on some devices. Amazon acknowledged that this was an error and not an intentional move to limit user freedom.

Sideload prevention was a result of a bug in the update, causing affected Fire TV devices to block third-party app installations with an error message. However, users can expect the issue to be resolved soon as Amazon has identified the cause and is working on a fix that will be rolled out automatically over the next week.

This development comes as Amazon announced its latest Fire TV Stick running on Vega OS, which replaces Android with Linux-based software for improved performance-to-power ratio. As a result, future streaming hardware from Amazon may not support sideloading capabilities.
