Amazon Seeks to Rebuild AI Team Amid Talent Shortage and Regulatory Fears
Amazon's stock price dipped nearly 2% on Wednesday following news that the e-commerce giant is rehiring workers who were previously laid off or had their jobs cut. According to internal emails, Amazon wants to bring back these employees to bolster its AI team, which has been struggling to attract talent from rival companies like Alphabet, Meta Platforms, OpenAI, and Anthropic.
The company's return-to-office order, implemented by CEO Andy Jassy on January 2, 2025, seems to be a major factor in the rehiring efforts. Amazon is reportedly having trouble recruiting AI workers due to this policy, leading to emails with former employees raising concerns about the issue.
Amazon claims that it's hiring competent workers to fill open roles, which may include former employees, but isn't limited to them. The company denies that its new hiring motivations are tied to AI development. The rehiring efforts come after a round of layoffs that saw over 30,000 jobs cut in the past year.
As Amazon focuses on beefing up its AI team, it may be trying to speed up development before increased regulation takes hold. Notable figures like Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang have expressed concerns about AI development speed and safety.
