Amazon Sees Revenue Growth Surge to 20% Amid AI-Fueled Cloud Demand
Amazon's revenue growth has accelerated to 20% in the second quarter of this year, marking its fastest clip in five years. This sudden acceleration comes after a period of slower growth since the pandemic era.
The company reported solid growth across all three segments, with North America sales up 16%, international sales up 15%, and AWS revenue growing 37% to $42.2 billion. The latter is particularly noteworthy, as it has been trending upwards for cloud computing platforms, even outpacing peers like Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud.
The growth in AWS can be attributed to the explosion of AI, which is driving demand for data centers and AI compute. Amazon expects this momentum to continue, forecasting $200 billion in capital expenditures, mostly going towards data centers to run AWS and AI compute.
While the shift in Prime Day certainly played a role in Amazon's acceleration, it's also clear that the business is gaining momentum, especially in AWS. This is reflected in the company's operating income, which jumped 43% to $27.5 billion, showing improved operating leverage.
Despite the promising outlook, Amazon's stock has given up nearly all of its gains since its earnings report, seemingly due to rising interest rates and broader macro concerns. However, the stock is trading at a similar price-to-earnings ratio as the S&P 500, making it an attractive buy for investors.
