Amazon Settlement Expansion: More Consumers Eligible for Refunds
A recent court decision has expanded Amazon's $2.5 billion settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The revised order allows more consumers to qualify for refunds from Amazon, increasing the maximum payment cap from $51 to $200.
The FTC claimed that Amazon engaged in 'deceptive Prime enrollment practices' and made it difficult for customers to cancel their subscriptions. As a result, Amazon agreed to pay up to $1.5 billion in redress to consumers harmed by its practices, in addition to a $1 billion civil penalty.
The expanded settlement affects millions of additional consumers who used between 11 to 20 Prime benefits in a one-year period. These customers were not included in the earlier refund payment phases but will now be eligible for automatic refunds starting October 1, 2026.
