Amazon Tackles Data Center Criticism with New Community Commitments
Amazon has announced new commitments to address criticism of its data centers in the US. The tech giant aims to generate buy-in by publishing annual energy and water usage reports, as well as investing over $1 billion in community college programs, trades training, and home energy-efficiency upgrades for local residents in data center counties.
AWS CEO Matt Garman directly responded to what he described as 'myths floating around' about the facilities. He countered claims that they consume too much water, drive up energy costs, and emit pollution. This move comes as tech companies face increasing pressure from communities and politicians regarding their data centers.
The concessions offered by Amazon are part of a larger trend where cities and towns across the US are earning benefits from hyperscalers. For instance, teachers in Louisiana received bonuses thanks to Meta's involvement.
