Amazon to Spend $1 Billion in Data Center Communities
Amazon has announced that it will invest over $1 billion in communities where its data centers are located, as part of a five-year plan to support education, job training, and environmental initiatives. This move comes amid growing opposition from politicians and consumers to the tech industry's rollout of massive data centers.
The investment is in addition to the more than $1 billion Amazon has already spent in communities with large data center presence over the past three years, according to Matt Garman, CEO of Amazon's cloud computing arm. Garman emphasized that Amazon is no longer using nondisclosure agreements with government agencies and is instead hosting open houses to share information about its projects.
Garman also warned against the spread of misinformation about data centers' impact on the environment and energy rates, citing over 100 moratoriums being considered across the country. He stated that these measures could have severe consequences for the US economy and national security if enacted.
