Amazon Unleashes Massive Expansion Plan to Dominate Retail
Amazon is planning to significantly expand its same-day fulfillment network, aiming to put facilities within 10 miles of 80% of Prime customers by 2031. This move comes as Amazon looks to increase its market share in the retail industry and close the gap with brick-and-mortar rivals like Walmart.
The company plans to add more than 1,000 new same-day fulfillment centers over the next five years, with estimates suggesting a $7 billion investment. This initiative, codenamed Project Mercury, aims to reduce delivery times and increase customer convenience.
Amazon's current approach has a same-day fulfillment center within a 90-minute drive from most Amazon Prime customers in the U.S., but the company wants to be closer still. By investing heavily in its logistics infrastructure, Amazon is betting that faster delivery will spark a virtuous cycle of increased sales and higher profit margins.
Despite investor uncertainty about the future of AI, which has weighed on Amazon's stock valuation, the company remains focused on its e-commerce business. With a market share of 59% in North America, Amazon is well-positioned to capitalize on growing demand for online shopping.
