Amazon Unveils Plan for Fully Automated Delivery Stations
Amazon is developing a new generation of highly automated warehouses called Project Tetromino. The initiative aims to build fully automated delivery stations, which receive packaged items from fulfillment centers and sort them for drivers to deliver to customers.
The company has planned an initial $103 million investment in a 2028 pilot project, followed by five sites in 2029 at a cost of about $85 million each. By 2030, Amazon plans to have 10 more Tetromino sites.
Tetromino uses AI and robotics to process packages at roughly 2.5 times the rate of existing delivery stations. The project's key technology could come from Boxbot, an AI and robotics supply chain startup that moves packages onto trays for storage using AI.
Amazon isn't alone in trying to automate these tasks. FedEx is expanding its use of AI-powered Dexterity robots that autonomously load packages into trailers, while UPS and DHL use robots for unloading.
