Amazon Warns of Consequences if Data Center Opponents Persist
Amazon Web Services (AWS) CEO Matt Garman has written a blog post arguing that the buildout of data centers in the US is crucial for the country's economic and national security. He compared it to the construction of the nation's interstate highway system, which helped transform the economy.
Garman warned that if local opposition continues to block or delay data center projects, the US could be at a disadvantage in the global race for AI development. Over 100 data center moratoriums are being considered across the country, and Garman stated that enacting these measures would have severe consequences.
In response to criticism about data centers' impact on electricity bills and pollution, Amazon has pledged to be more transparent and invest in local communities. The company will work to ensure its facilities don't raise residents' electricity bills, create jobs with competitive wages, and hold open houses to provide information about projects.
Amazon also announced a new program called Built Together, which will invest over $1 billion in the next five years in communities where data centers are being built. The company says local communities will help decide how this money is spent, potentially on education, job training, energy affordability, and water and energy conservation.
