Amazon's $12 Billion Investment Boosts Connecticut's Economy
Amazon has significantly bolstered its presence in Connecticut, investing over $12 billion in the state since its arrival in 2015. The company now employs more than 15,000 full- and part-time workers and supports over 10,000 indirect jobs across various industries. These investments have contributed more than $10 billion to Connecticut's economy, reinforcing its role as a key logistics hub for Amazon.
One of Amazon's major contributions is its commitment to workforce development. The company offers competitive wages, with core operations employees earning an average hourly base wage of nearly $24, and total compensation exceeding $32 when benefits are included. Amazon's Career Choice program has upskilled over 2,100 employees since 2019, partnering with three local educational institutions to provide tuition support for further education.
Amazon's infrastructure investments in Connecticut include six fulfillment and sortation centers, 11 delivery stations, and 13 Whole Foods Market locations. The company has also expanded its sustainable infrastructure with six solar farms and six on-site solar power installations. Additionally, Amazon has empowered Connecticut's small businesses, enabling independent sellers to sell over 42 million items through its platform, with the average seller generating more than $275,000 in annual sales.
Beyond economic contributions, Amazon actively engages in community support. The company has delivered over 900,000 meals to food banks, reached more than 20,000 students through education programs, and supported 200,000 computer science learning hours. Over 700 Amazon employees have volunteered in local communities, demonstrating the company's commitment to being a good neighbor.
