Amazon's Enormous Gas-Burning Power Plant: A Threat to Climate Goals
Amazon's latest move to increase its AI computing capacity is sparking controversy. The tech giant has confirmed plans for a massive gas-burning power plant in Texas, which would supply up to 7.65 gigawatts of energy to a planned data center in Pecos County.
The plant's 35 turbines are expected to produce 33 million tons of CO2 per year, making it the largest single source of emissions in the United States, surpassing that of entire countries like Switzerland, Ireland, and Bulgaria.
This move raises questions about Amazon's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint. The company has stated climate goals aiming for net-zero emissions by 2040, but this new development seems at odds with those targets.
Amazon spokesperson Margaret Callahan acknowledged the challenges but emphasized that growth and sustainability can coexist.
