American Airlines Considers Next-Generation Widebody Upgrade with Boeing's 777-9
As American Airlines approaches a major decision on its long-haul fleet, Boeing has made a significant move by allowing an American test pilot to fly the 777-9 aircraft. The 777-9 is a next-generation widebody that offers improved fuel efficiency and range compared to older variants of the 777.
With its aging 777-200ER fleet approaching retirement in the 2030s, American Airlines needs to decide on a replacement for its largest widebodies. The airline has already ordered dozens of Boeing 787 Dreamliners but remains the only major US carrier without a commitment to a next-generation widebody larger than the 787-9.
Boeing's 777X program has faced years of delays, and adding American Airlines as a new customer would be a significant vote of confidence in the aircraft. However, American's international network is relatively limited compared to other major US carriers, which may limit its need for larger widebodies like the 777-9.
