American Airlines Expands International Routes with Airbus A321XLR

American Airlines has announced seven new international routes for its 2027 schedule, with several of them utilizing the airline's Airbus A321XLR aircraft.

The XLR planes have a range of up to 4,700 nautical miles and are smaller than other aircraft in American's fleet, making them cheaper to operate. The airline has allocated more space to premium seats on its XLRs, which take up about a fifth of the plane.

The new routes include flights from New York John F. Kennedy International Airport to Amsterdam, starting March 28, and Philadelphia to Porto, Portugal, also starting March 28. American is also adding a fourth daily flight between JFK and London Heathrow Airport, on a Boeing 787-9, starting March 28.

The airline's plan is to use the XLRs to focus on routes to smaller European cities from its Philadelphia hub or from New York City. The Vienna route will extend through early January 2028 to draw tourists who are aiming to visit European Christmas markets.
