American Airlines Eyes Major Wide Body Aircraft Order

Instruments

American Airlines is nearing a wide body aircraft order that could see it acquire up to 65 planes from either Airbus or Boeing. Deliveries are expected in the 2030s, and the airline's current fleet includes 67 Boeing 777s and 70 Boeing 787s.

While Delta has 78 wide body planes on order and United has 135, American's remaining wide body order book includes just 19 787-9s. This suggests that American needs to make a significant investment in its long-haul fleet.

The A330neo could be a contender for the order, despite being smaller than the 787-10. Nat Pieper, American's Chief Commercial Officer, has experience with the A330neo from his time at Delta, where it was ordered as part of a major fleet expansion.
