American Airlines Eyes Widebody Jet Orders from Boeing and Airbus

American Airlines is considering ordering up to 65 widebody jets from Airbus and Boeing for delivery in the 2030s. The airline plans to replace its aging Boeing 777-200ERs, targeting replacement of 47 aircraft. This move follows pandemic-era fleet cuts that left American underpowered during international recovery.

The decision may involve a split order, reflecting strategic flexibility after years of fleet simplification. Chief Commercial Officer Nat Pieper signals openness to Airbus, citing economic flexibility despite Boeing's operational advantages.

American previously retired 75 long-haul aircraft during the pandemic and deferred 10 787 deliveries. The airline had earlier cancelled 22 inherited A350 orders and sold simulators, but now considers renewed Airbus consideration.
