American Express Policy Change Threatens Advisor-Client Relationships

American Express has made a significant change to its Platinum Card benefits that is causing concern among luxury travel advisors. As of September 15, card members will only receive the up-to-$300 onboard cruise credit when booking eligible cruises directly through Amex Travel.

This new policy eliminates the benefit for cruises booked through independent travel advisors and online travel agencies (OTAs), which could significantly impact advisor-client relationships.

ASTA has requested a meeting with American Express to discuss the change, urging the company to reconsider its decision. The organization argues that the move would limit consumer choice, disrupt established advisor-client relationships, and risk separating travelers from professionals who know their needs.

Travel advisors are already preparing for what they may do if negotiations between ASTA and American Express go nowhere. Some say they will continue to book cruises for clients without pushing them to use the Amex card, while others worry about explaining the new policy to clients.
