American Express Reaches 190M Global Merchant Locations Milestone
American Express has reached a major milestone in its global acceptance strategy, announcing that its cards are now accepted at more than 190 million merchant locations worldwide. This represents an increase of approximately 20 million locations this year and reflects decades of investment in expanding the company's global network.
The number of American Express-accepting merchant locations outside the U.S. has more than doubled over the last four years, with significant gains seen across various regions, including the Caribbean, Canada, Japan, Mexico, Europe, and Singapore.
The growth in acceptance is attributed to key partnerships, targeted expansion in priority cities, and innovation in digital payment capabilities. American Express has formed relationships with major global partners such as Adyen, Mercado Pago, Dojo, Alipay, and others to expand its network.
The company's approach focuses on adding acceptance in the cities and categories where its high-spending card members want to spend, providing greater access to premium customers for merchants and more opportunities for card members to use their cards at home and while traveling.
