Google Ditches Display Ads for AI-Powered Demand Gen
The Google Display Network is undergoing a significant change as the company transitions to Demand Gen campaigns. This shift aims to capture consumer attention across immersive, visual touchpoints such as YouTube, Shorts, Discover, and Gmail. Unlike traditional display ads, Demand Gen uses AI-powered campaign types that drive actual conversions rather than just impressions.
The internet and consumer habits are constantly evolving, with people now spending hours watching video feeds and scrolling through personalized content. Demand Gen moves beyond passive banner ads by delivering high-impact, lookalike-targeted creatives that can help businesses reach potential customers where they're spending time today.
The transition timeline is as follows: June 2026 saw the rollout of a migration tool inside Google Ads accounts for eligible advertisers to manually move active campaigns. By January 2027, advertisers will no longer be able to create new standalone Display campaigns. Later in 2027, remaining active Display campaigns will be automatically migrated to Demand Gen by Google.
Demand Gen offers several key benefits, including better placement opportunities across various platforms, lookalike targeting based on high-value customer data, and immersive formats such as video carousels. Smart bidding algorithms can also optimize budgets to drive clicks, leads, and website visits.
