Apple, Amazon Partner on Satellite Connectivity for Future iPhones

A deal has been struck between Apple and Amazon to ensure seamless satellite connectivity on future iPhone models. Under this agreement, Amazon will acquire Globalstar, a renowned satellite operator, with Apple signing a separate agreement to leverage Amazon's 'Leo' network for its device connectivity features.

The partnership aims to provide users with reliable access to features such as Emergency SOS, satellite messaging, and the 'Find My' app even in areas without traditional coverage. According to Greg Joswiak, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing at Apple, this cooperation will ensure that users remain connected, embodying Apple's philosophy of prioritizing user safety.

The deal paves the way for innovative features such as full operation of Apple Maps via satellite and sending images in the Messages app via satellite. Apple is reportedly working on a suite of revolutionary features that require updates to satellite infrastructure, including improved connectivity in indoor environments and providing satellite service via 5G networks.

The acquisition deal is expected to be completed by 2027 after necessary regulatory approvals. The agreement marks a significant step towards competing with companies like SpaceX and its Starlink service.
