Apple Challenges UK Demand for iCloud Data Access in Fresh Legal Fight
Apple's (AAPL) stock price fell by 1.78% to $303.42 as the company launched a fresh legal challenge against the UK government's demand for access to encrypted iCloud data.
The new case was filed with the Investigatory Powers Tribunal, an independent court that reviews claims involving UK intelligence powers. This is in response to a technical capability notice (TCN) requiring technology companies to provide access to customer information for investigations related to national security and child sexual abuse.
Apple has long argued that weakening encryption would expose users to wider security risks. In a statement, the company reiterated its stance, saying 'As we have said many times before, we have never built a backdoor or master key to any of our products or services and we never will.'
The UK government had previously backed away from a broader demand involving data access for both UK and U.S. users. The latest request reportedly applies only to British users.
