Apple Maps Joins Google in Renaming Lake Ontario to 'Lake America'

US tech companies Apple and Alphabet have altered their maps to reflect the Trump administration's executive order renaming Lake Ontario as 'Lake America'. The change was made on September 1, 2026, for US users only.

The decision follows a similar move by Alphabet, which changed the name of the lake on its Google Maps for US users late Saturday. Apple confirmed that US users will see 'Lake America' following a change to the body of water's name in the U.S. Geographic Names Information System.

Users in Canada will continue to see Lake Ontario, and users in the rest of the world will see both names. This approach was also used after Trump renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney have expressed their opposition to the name change, with Hochul stating that she would not be changing the name, which is more than 400 years old. About 52% of the surface area of Lake Ontario is in Canada, with the remainder in New York.
