Apple Teams Up with LG for Smart Home Device Expansion
Apple and LG Electronics have joined forces to create a new lineup of smart home devices, including video doorbells, smart thermostats, and security cameras. The partnership leverages Apple's expertise in design and engineering, while LG will handle manufacturing, sales, and customer support under its own brand. Apple is set to unveil its proprietary hardware on October 13, with the LG co-developed accessories expected to follow after regulatory approvals.
The collaboration mirrors Apple's past strategies with companies like Belkin and Logitech, allowing it to expand its ecosystem without direct manufacturing responsibilities. The upcoming devices will integrate with Apple's smart home platform and support industry standards like Thread, Matter, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. Notably, the LG smart lock will feature ultra-wideband (UWB) technology for automatic unlocking.
This initiative marks a significant overhaul of Apple's HomeKit platform, which has struggled to compete against Amazon and Google's offerings. For LG, the partnership represents an expansion into new home hardware categories, including its first international smart lock release outside South Korea. Both companies have declined to comment on the collaboration.
AAPL stock saw a modest gain of 0.2% on Tuesday, with retail sentiment on Stocktwits described as 'bearish' despite a 23% year-to-date increase.
