Apple's $1,999 Foldable iPhone Duo: A Premium Tier with Uncertain Demand
Apple's latest iPhone offering is a foldable device called the Duo, which starts at $1,999 and will be available on October 23. This is $800 more than the base price of the iPhone 18 Pro, which begins at $1,199 and is already available for preorder.
The Duo's defining feature is its large inner screen, measuring 7.6 inches when open, compared to the 6.3-inch display on the iPhone 18 Pro. This allows for a more spacious multitasking experience, with Split View capable of placing two apps side by side. However, the larger size comes at a cost: the Duo weighs 43 grams more than its Pro counterpart and uses Touch ID instead of Face ID.
The Duo's higher price is not solely due to its larger screen or advanced features. Apple has also opted for a dual rear-camera system with up to 2x optical-quality telephoto, whereas the iPhone 18 Pro boasts a dedicated 48MP telephoto camera with up to 8x optical-quality reach.
The Duo's pricing and availability have sparked interest among investors, who see potential in the device's premium tier. However, experts caution that foldables still account for less than 5% of global smartphone shipments, raising concerns about market size and demand.
