Apple's AI Detachment Turns into Stock Market Baggage
Apple's AI stance has shifted from being seen as a safe haven for investors to becoming a liability. The company's positioning as an outsider to the artificial intelligence spending boom, which had propelled its shares earlier this year, is now working against it.
In the first half of 2026, Apple's reluctance to invest heavily in data centers and computing infrastructure made it an attractive option for investors skeptical of the heavy spending by other tech giants. However, since July 28th, when Apple's stock reached a record high, investor sentiment has shifted back towards AI beneficiaries.
The Nasdaq 100 rose and the Philadelphia Stock Exchange Semiconductor Index (SOX) advanced more sharply over a recent multi-week stretch, while Apple shares declined about 10%. The company's stock has shown increasing detachment from the broader market, with its 40-day correlation with the S&P 500 approaching zero.
