The Arkansas Joint Committee on Energy met to discuss data centers, specifically those of Google and Entergy. The meeting was sparked by leaked documents revealing a potential sweetheart deal between Google and Entergy, where ratepayers may be footing the bill for the tech giant's solar project in West Memphis.

Google representative Rachel Wilson spoke about the benefits of data centers, citing their role in powering web searches and email. She downplayed the role of AI in the company's expansion into new areas. Google has pledged $25 million to a community benefit fund in West Memphis, which will help low-income residents with energy-efficient windows.

However, Entergy's director of public affairs, John Bethel, claimed that ratepayers would benefit from paying for construction costs upfront through the Generating Arkansas Jobs Act. This law allows Entergy to charge customers up-front for constructing new power plants, rather than requiring them to fund it themselves. Sen. Jimmy Hickey Jr. expressed frustration with this notion and called for Entergy to 'prove up' their claims.
