Asian Student Wins Top Award for Breakthrough Inter-Chip Interface Research
Seoyoung Jang, a student at DGIST, received the Best Student Paper Award for his research on ultra-high-speed inter-chip interface semiconductors. The award was given at ESSERC 2026, which took place in Mallorca, Spain from September 7 to 10. This is a rare achievement for an Asian researcher.
Jang's paper addressed next-generation ultra-high-speed inter-chip interface technology required for AI data centers and high-performance computing (HPC) systems. The research was a result of an international joint collaboration between DGIST and IBM Research Europe-Zurich that started in 2022.
The team applied a discrete multitone (DMT) approach to divide the single wide frequency band into 31 subchannels, allocating data and power according to the channel characteristics of each frequency band. This allowed them to achieve a maximum data transmission rate of 76.2 Gb/s while consuming only 144 mW of power.
DGIST plans to continue expanding joint research with leading institutions worldwide and strengthening research and talent development in next-generation high-speed interface semiconductors.
