ASML Surpasses Qualcomm as Semiconductor Giants Show Divergent Revenue Trends
ASML Holding and Qualcomm are two semiconductor industry giants with distinct revenue trends. According to recent data, ASML has been experiencing consecutive periods of revenue growth, while Qualcomm's top-line performance has contracted. Over the last eight quarters, Qualcomm generated higher quarterly totals for most of the period, but ASML recently surpassed it.
ASML Holding primarily earns its revenue by developing and selling advanced lithography equipment systems required to produce complex integrated circuits. The company has established a collaborative initiative with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing for large-format photomasks to support advanced manufacturing. In contrast, Qualcomm earns its revenue mainly through the creation of integrated circuits for global wireless communication networks.
Qualcomm's mobile device business faces headwinds due to rising component prices, which have reduced consumer demand and put pressure on the company's margins. Additionally, Qualcomm's modem business with Apple has eroded, contributing to its shrinking sales. However, the company is transitioning to servicing the data center market, as signaled by its partnership with Amazon.
ASML's consistent revenue growth can be attributed to its unique position in the semiconductor sector. The company possesses a legal monopoly due to competitors' inability to replicate its advanced lithography machines used in AI chip production. This has enabled ASML to maintain reliable revenue growth over the years, with recent data showing $11.3 billion in quarterly revenue for Q4 2025.
