The Austrian Armed Forces are exploring the Boeing F-15EX Eagle II as a potential replacement for their aging Tranche 1 Eurofighters. Surprisingly, the F-16, a popular choice like Slovakia’s Block 70 variant, is not under consideration. The F-15EX, an advanced version of the Cold War-era F-15 Eagle, stands out for its versatility and heavy payload capacity, making it a strong contender.

The F-15EX features modern avionics, including digital fly-by-wire controls, large touchscreen cockpits, and advanced systems like the AN/APG-82 AESA radar and EPAWSS electronic warfare suite. Powered by two General Electric F110-GE-129 engines, it can reach speeds of up to 2.5 times the speed of sound and operate at altitudes of 60,000 feet. While not stealthy, it excels in carrying heavy weapons and sensors, making it ideal for defending against modern threats like drones and cruise missiles.

Boeing has equipped the F-15EX with cutting-edge technology, transforming it into a ‘flying supercomputer.’ Its mission computer, separate from flight controls, allows for rapid software updates. The aircraft’s large radar and infrared systems enable long-range target acquisition, crucial for countering waves of drones and missiles. The F-15EX’s large fuel capacity and heavy weapons load allow it to engage multiple targets during extended patrols.

The F-15EX’s capabilities were highlighted during the Israel-Iran conflict in 2025 and 2026, where older F-15 variants played a key role in intercepting thousands of drones. The aircraft’s ability to carry numerous air-to-air missiles, including laser-guided APKWS II rockets, made it indispensable in drone defense operations. The U.S. and Israeli Air Forces continue to upgrade their F-15s, demonstrating the platform’s enduring relevance in modern air warfare.
