Autonomous Agents Hit Snag as OpenAI Cancels Release Amid Safety Fears
OpenAI has cancelled its plans to release GPT-6.1 Astra in October 2026 after internal testing revealed alignment failures, marking a significant setback for the company's autonomous agent roadmap.
The model was designed to complete tasks without human oversight and improve on earlier writing performance.
'For anything regarding safety and alignment, there is a trade off,' said Saachi Jain, Head of Safety Systems at OpenAI. 'You really do need to find what is the right line between staying within scope but also avoiding laziness in terms of how the model actually pursues tasks even when it hits friction.'
In related news, Microsoft is expanding its AI platform with updates that shift the system towards autonomous action and custom development.
