Basel III Endgame Raises Concerns for Small Business Lending
JPMorganChase's top executive, Stevie Baron, has expressed concern over proposed federal bank capital rules that could severely limit access to credit for millions of small businesses. The regulatory proposal, known as Basel III Endgame, aims to ensure banks have enough capital and financial cushion to weather economic volatility.
However, Baron argues that the current framework could have unintended consequences, including higher borrowing costs and reduced lending for small business owners. He specifically noted proposed changes to the Global Systemically Important Bank (GSIB) surcharge, which could encourage trading over lending.
JPMorganChase is considered a GSIB and would be subject to stricter capital requirements under the new framework. Baron urged regulators to reconsider the proposed changes and retain the current approach to the short-term wholesale funding factor.
