Bezos Invests in Liverpool: Amazon Founder Takes Minority Stake
Jeff Bezos' Amazon has made its first foray into sports ownership with a minority stake in Liverpool Football Club. The billionaire, who is the fourth-richest person in the world with an estimated net worth of £192bn, invested through his venture capital firm K5 Sports.
The investment was led by British-Indian millionaire Amit Bhatia and also included Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin's wife Elaine. Bhatia will become Liverpool's vice-chairman and join the board pending regulatory approval.
Fenway Sports Group (FSG), which bought Liverpool for £300m in 2010, will retain majority ownership and operational control of the club. The deal values the club between £5bn and £6bn and has no impact on the transfer window or a separate budget associated with the investment.
Bezos' involvement marks his first sports ownership venture, although he remains one of Amazon's biggest shareholders. His investment will complement FSG's long-term growth ambitions by bringing together experts from across global business, technology, and investment.
