BHP's Battery-Electric Truck Trial Hits Productivity Snag

BHP, one of the world's largest mining companies, is assessing the productivity impact of using battery-electric trucks with static charging at its Jimblebar iron ore mine in Australia. The company announced a trial with two Caterpillar 793 XE Early Learners in June 2026 to evaluate the performance and feasibility of battery-electric trucks in a production environment.

The trial is generating critical data on technical readiness, infrastructure requirements, and commercial viability, including testing high-powered static and dynamic charging solutions. BHP estimates that current battery-electric truck technology results in a loss of around 1,000 hours per truck per year due to charging time, which translates to significant lost tonnage.

However, BHP emphasizes the potential for further evolution and progress in ultrafast charger technologies and the integration of autonomy and AI to optimize truck operation. The company also notes that dynamic charging can help fill the gap until more advanced solutions are available.
